A stunning structure built 150 miles inside the Arctic Circle will serve as a crucial research center for glaciologists. But perhaps more importantly, it will be a place where humans can travel to see the real-time impact of climate change.
The Icefjord Centre will provide a permanent outpost for this scientific work as well as an interpretive center to help visitors understand it. Designed by Danish architects at Dorte Mandrup, the structure is made from wood and is designed to have a low-profile on the landscape while offering panoramic vistas from the rooftop.
The Icefjord Centre is planned to open in 2020, but will Greenland even have any ice then? This year, Greenland experienced an unusually early spring thawthat melted an exceptionally large portion of its northernmost ice sheet. If current trends continue, scientists have predicted that the surface ofGreenland’s ice sheet might have annual meltdowns as soon as 2100. This might be one of the last places that regular people will be able to see glaciers at all. But at least the view is nice.
