A lot has been said about the side effects of sitting and the positive aspects of standing up while working. But what about the pain associated with being on our feet for too long? The CEO of the trampoline company JumpSport Mark Publicover created Wurf Board, an air-filled surface that reduces the impact of standing on a hard surface while keeping the body engaged.
The idea came up shortly after the company purchased standing desks for the office and some employees complained about not being able to stand for too long, even with anti-fatigue mats. He realized the problem with these mats is that they’re designed for activities in which people are constantly moving, not standing still. Publicover says:
“I wanted a surface that would encourage you to keep moving, that would be reactive and give you feedback instead of feeling dead, like standard foam-based anti-fatigue mats.“
Drawing inspiration from trampolines and surfboards, the goal was to create a lightweight platform that would grip the floor when weight was placed on it, and could be adjusted to be either firm or bouncy. Raised two inches off the floor and made of high quality drop stitched PVC (the same material used for inflatable paddle boards) the board is designed to keep the core engaged and stimulate balance, which in turn improves posture.
The Wurf adds a new element to the standing desk sensation. It allows for dozens of micro workouts that can be performed without interrupting the workflow, which in turn can increase energy and productivity as well an improvement in overall fitness.
After a successful Kickstarter campaign, the boards are available for pre-order and are expected to ship sometime in the next month.
