ThirdEye is an innovative visual object recognition app, developed by a group of freshmen students at the University of Pennsylvania, that is designed to empower people suffering from lowered vision when in retail environments. 19-year-old Joe Cappadona was the initial driving force behind the project. He came up with the idea when thinking about his experiences helping his vision-impaired grandfather at the grocery store.
The app is capable of scanning objects and reading back their label, working in conjunction with smart glasses. The scanning buttons are deliberately over-sized and made bright-colored in order to make them as user-friendly as possible to people suffering from sight deficiencies. The object recognition technology is powerful enough to be able to identify objects right down to their brand name.
Ultimately, ThirdEye could prove to be a boon for vision-impaired shoppers in retail environments that can be very confusing and difficult to navigate.
