Withings, leading manufacturer of connected health devices, aims to redefine how people use connected scales with the launch of its latest product, Body Cardio. The fourth generation scale provides users with a comprehensive view of their health by measuring weight, BMI, body composition and standing heart rate.

To measure body composition, Body Cardio uses bioelectrical impedance, a technique that determines the body’s percentage of fat, muscle, water and bone mass based on the resistance of body tissues to the flow of a small electrical signals. The scale also comes with a number of features to encourage everyday use, including graphs showing weight trends, step count from the previous day and the morning’s weather report.

Withings-BodyCardio (2).jpgPerhaps the most impressive aspect of the scale is the use of Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) measurements, a key indicator of cardiac health associated with hypertension. PWV measures arterial stiffness based on the speed at which heartbeat vibrations spread out along the arterial wall; Body Cardio determines this based on age and time it takes for blood to flow from the aorta to the vessels in the feet. Along with the app Health Mate, the scale provides users with an evolution of their PWV over time and indicates whether its values are normal, optimal or at risk. The app automatically syncs data, helping users visualize trends over time and note how weight impacts their overall health.
