Airbnb and Japanese design house Go Hasegawa have teamed up on a project that challenges the notion of shared space. With a project titled Sugi No Ie, or Yoshino Cedar House, the two companies took part in the tri-annual exhibition, House Vision, and together worked to conceptualize the varying ways in which a home or building can evolve during the day. Airbnb is the first western company to be invited to participate in the exhibition.

This year, House Vision —organized and curated by Japanese designer Kenya Hara — held the theme of ‘CODIVIDUAL’, and hosted 13 creative projects proposing the future of home innovation. With the theme in mind, companies worked to demonstrate the connection between guest and host, and how vital relationships can benefit from not just an individual but an entire community.

Designed as a guesthouse or residence, Sugi No Ie will be delivered to a permanent location in the town of Yoshino, Japan, where visitors can book the space for holidays.

The proceeds of each booking at Sugi No Ie will go toward a fund designated for the local Yoshino community.
